Imperfect tense (l’imparfait)
‘Used to’ / ‘was …-ing’ and descriptions in the past — with full conjugations.
nous form − ons + -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient

- Habits: Quand j’étais petit, je jouais au foot.
- Descriptions: C’était génial. Il faisait chaud.
- Interrupted actions: Je regardais la télé quand il a téléphoné.
Examiner tip
Perfect = single completed action; imperfect = background, habit or description. Use both in one sentence for top marks.
Common mistake
Être is the only irregular stem: j’étais, not j’sommais.
