Depuis + present tense

How to say ‘I have been doing’ — French uses the present tense.

present tense + depuis + time

J’habite ici depuis trois ans.

I have lived here for three years.

Elle étudie le français depuis 2022.

She has studied French since 2022.

  • depuis une heure — for an hour
  • depuis longtemps — for a long time
  • depuis lundi — since Monday

Examiner tip

This is a favourite translation trap: English uses a past tense, French uses the present.

Common mistake

‘J’ai habité ici depuis trois ans’ — wrong tense.
